Congratulations are in order for both the women’s and men’s QLD Pirates teams who have claimed victory in the Australian Volleyball League (AVL) titles!
After six home and away rounds, and a season filled with dedication and hard work, the QLD Pirates women’s team won an impressive seven of their eight matches, with the men’s team close behind, winning six of their eight matches.
This is the first year that QLD has finished top of the table in both men’s and women’s divisions, and is a testament to the commitment of the players, coaches, and support team, including our corporate partners, Suzuki Queensland, GAME Clothing, Pivotal Motion Physiotherapy, The Fit Lab, and Perana Sports.
Completing the clean sweep, the QLD Buccaneers, VQ’s AVL development squad, took out both titles in the Reserve Grades, the men going seven and one for the season, and the women, 3 and one.
Jon Gibbs, Volleyball QLD’s General Manager commented, “this is a great achievement by the QLD Pirates and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome! Queensland has a legacy of outstanding performance in the AVL, but this season is definitely one for Volleyball Queensland’s history books”.
He continued, “The results speak for themselves, and it’s clear that throughout the season, not only did the players continue to go above and beyond on the court, but the players, coaches, and extended QLD Pirates community really embodied VQ’s values and wore our maroon jerseys with pride”.
Following the new split-format introduced in 2018, the AVL Championships will take place in Melbourne in December. The QLD Pirates’ return to the court is highly anticipated by the teams and spectators alike, as they try to leverage their dual victory in an effort to cement their place as the teams to beat. The QLD Buccaneers will also take to the court in the competition and similarly, hope to bring home the Pirates’ treasure!
Volleyball QLD wishes all members of the program the best of luck!
